The Astino Monastery is a building of rare beauty, a small jewel set between the Allegrezza wood and the Benaglia hill. It was founded in 1107 by the Vallombrosian monks who, in the enchanting green of the Bergamo valleys, found the perfect incarnation of an ideal physical and spiritual union between man and nature.
It was completed in 1540, when the mighty south-west tower, which still dominates over the valley, was built. Restoration work in 2013 brought it back to its former glory, bringing to light some frescoed monastery rooms. From summer 2020, the monastery hosts ‘Cavour 1880’ summer location.
Bistrot & Bar
During the summer, Cavour 1880 reveals its dual soul.
There are places that remain in our hearts: for the atmosphere, for fragrances and tastes that recall memories and happy moments. It doesn’t matter why we return "where we had a good time", we must live up to the memories in the challenge with the present.
This is the case at Monastero di Astino, in Bergamo, a blend of tradition and modernity, an oasis of tranquillity, enlivened by the colour of fresh fruit on drinks and the liveliness of Italian bollicine in a chilled glass for a cool refreshment or by the bright red of a good bottle of wine to share, accompanied by the excellence of Pasticceria Cavour in Città Alta.
The Cusine
A leap into history in a modern key: the atmosphere of an ancient white cloister where a varied choice of dishes with particular attention to the raw materials is served to satisfy the desire for delicacies, for an aperitif or a dinner while listening to good music. Good food is always the star: appetisers, express dishes and gourmet pizzas will accompany you all the way to dessert, whether it be zuppa inglese, red fruit meringue or the famous basket of cannoncini.
Imagine a corner of paradise surrounded by greenery, where a monastery hides behind itself a small garden, refreshed by the large branches of trees and the valley that opens up beyond the border wall. This is the ‘Brolo of Astino’, in ancient times a vegetable garden that now lends its beauty to a trattoria (typical informal and inexpensive Italian restaurant) born from the desire to savour the tastes of traditional dishes in a convivial and joyful atmosphere that wants to revive the beauty and the friendly ambience of the old trattorias of Bergamo.
